#31: Completed
I briefly mentioned this a couple weeks ago but when we were recently in Piedmont, my mom taught my friend Nicole C. and myself how to crochet! Like sewing, my mom has crocheted my entire life and I watched her for years and years. Her speciality is making afghans and she has made more than I can remember. I would watch as she would take a ball of yarn and work it into a beautiful afghan for us to cuddle under. Growing up I always had an afghan on my bed that my mom made. Our bed actually has four afghans on it: one for Frank, one for me, and two baby ones for Mary Rene!
Nicole C. and I decided to start with simple projects and make sexy scarves. My mom first showed Nicole C. how to crochet because Mary Rene was awake and we were playing. She was telling Nicole C. all the technical terms and told her that a ball of yarn is called a stein. But when she said the word it came out funny and sounded like she was using a German accent or something. So from the other room I shouted, “it is called a skank?”
Mom: “No it is called a stein.” Then she proceeded to show Nicole C. how to crochet. Every few minutes I would butt my head in their conversation and say something like, “Nicole, your skank looks good.” My mom would look up at me, roll her eyes and correct me by saying, “that’s not called a skank. A ball of yarn is a stein and Nicole is working on a project.” A few minutes later I would come back in the room and say something like, “when are you going to teach me to skank?” My mom would correct me again, “you don’t call it skanking, it is called crocheting.” After about the 10th time my mom gave up and let me say the word skank.

Mary Rene took her nap and it was my turn to learn to skank. My mom got me started and after about 15 minutes I finally got it. Later that night my mom went back home and it was just Nicole C., Mary Rene and myself. When Mary Rene went to bed for the night, Nicole C. finished teaching me how to skank and then we skanked the night away.
We were having so much fun sitting there skanking and saying the work skank in so many different skanky ways. We were having some good laughs as we worked on our scarves. Who would have thought that skanking would be so much fun?
We were supposed to use two balls of yarn for the scarf so it would be thick and well…look like a real scarf. We only used one ball of yarn so my scarf came out looking like one of those tiny scarves that women wear to work with their business suit. I call it a “wine snob scarf” and here are pictures to prove it.

Okay, I totally used my daughter as a prop in those photos. And no, there was no wine in the glass.
So I am done with my scarf and I have moved on to making a bag. Eventually I will make an afghan but I want to start with small projects. So you may wonder, do I prefer to sew or crochet now? Well, you can crochet anywhere so it is more convenient. Crocheting is more relaxing too and I can do it right before I go to bed while sitting on the couch. The other night I was able to crochet and watch a movie with Frank at the same time! So I guess I like crocheting better. But I will continue to sew!
But Mary Rene wants to learn to crochet too.

Or maybe she just wants to destroy my mom’s skank.

You are so talented. I love the photo of Mary with the BIG ball of yarn and also with her wearing the scarf and holding the wine glass.
