7 Quick Takes Friday (#52)

Something I thought I would never do: rub Vick’s on my chest and aim my daughter’s nose towards it while she nursed.  Well I did it.  She stopped to sniff but then went ahead and nursed.  I also rubbed it on her chest before she went to bed and she woke up feeling so much better.  Thanks Melissa for the suggestion!

Since my dad is going to occasionally watch Mary Rene once he retires, we decided to start leaving her at my parent’s house for a bit while I go run errands.  Usually I am always with her when we visit so this was a big adjustment.  But you know what, she did fine.  She loves it at my parent’s house and has so much to do there.  They wore her out and she was so tired that she took a 2.5 hour nap.  The nap would have been longer but I sneezed when I walked by her and she instantly woke up.  I must say, going grocery shopping alone was really nice.  I enjoy Mary Rene’s company, and I know she likes to be out and about, but I was able to really concentrate on the sales and my coupons.  Hopefully my little shopping trips pays off and we stick to the grocery budget this week.

Two of the gals at work are pregnant and we are having a baby shower for one of them today.  This gal is having a baby girl so I decided to try and make her a pair of baby girl shoes.

shoes

This was very tedious and I’m not sure if I want to make this shoe thing a hobby.  I like making taggie blankets as gifts but I don’t think I’ll be going overboard and making girl shoes as well.   Although they are so cute and the finished product makes me so happy that I might do them again.  Hmm.

Having a blog is great and it gets people to do things easily.  Case in point, my post yesterday about the deductible led my wonderful husband to call our insurance company again.  They confirmed that I will have a $800 deductible but now they are stating that the baby won’t have to pay his/her deductible until he/she starts making regular doctor visits.  They also said something about me not paying the deductible if all the stars align correctly.  So, now we are praying that all this is true and we leave with a healthy baby boy or girl and a small hospital bill.

I have decided to delay vaccinations for Sweet Pea.  I’ve been doing a lot of research this week and my fantastic sister-in-law is getting books for me to read from the library, where she works.  So far, I like the Dr. Sears method the best.  Go figure.  For the moms that read this blog, how have you handled vaccinations?

We have this little hand-held back scratcher that is shaped like a hand and the fingers knead into your back.  It an awesome little thing and I misplaced it several months ago.  Somehow Mary Rene found it and has been playing with it.  I showed her how it worked on her back and she started laughing so hard.  Which got me thinking, I’m going to make this a tickle game.  So everyday this week I have been handing it to Mary Rene and trying to get her to tickle me on the back with it.  She is starting to get the hang of it and is having fun.  Now I just need her to apply a little pressure and go in a circular motion while I kick back and relax during the massage.

I have tried really hard not to turn on the television much this week because I am just sickened by the disaster in Haiti.  My heart just breaks for these people and all they are going through.  When it comes to natural disasters, are you plugged to the tv or do you steer away?

I have had Natalie get her vaccinations at the recommended time, because I figure I leave it to the professionals, and the medical professionals have set up this schedule for good reasons. I also did a bit of research, because I worried about the possible links to autism, and spoke with our pediatrician, and she assured me we are doing the right thing and also provided me with a lot of research to support the scheduled vaccines.

I also get Luke’s and Madelyn’s vacccinations at the recommended time because, like Katie, I put my trust into the doctor because they are the professionals. But I would considering delaying vaccinations if I had a baby that had a poor immune system due to illness or was premature. I have also worried about the possible links to autism.

I delay vaccinations with Alex. He will get all his shots, but I do not overload his system. He only gets two shots at a time, max. I have a schedule from when I worked at an autism center. I presented it to my ped and she tweaked it here and there based on our needs. He has never had any issues with reactions, is totally heathy and happy and my ped is quite supportive. Trust YOUR mommy instinct and do what you feel driven to do. If you feel delaying shots is best for your family then do not ever hesitate to do so (and vice versa). I would suggest you discuss this with your doctor ahead of time and present him/her with a possible schedule. Your doctor can look it over and makes changes as s/he feel necessary. Dr. Sear’s book is good and I also recommend What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Vaccinations (or something close to that, I cannot remember the exact title). Email me if you have any questions or want a copy of the schedule.

Since this was a “quick take” post I didn’t really go into complete detail but we are planning on still getting Sweet Pea vaccinated. Our plan is to delay the vaccinations to where he/she only gets the maximum of two at a time. Basically I am not happy with what happened at my last two doctor visits and I am in the process of changing doctors. I will be talking about this next week.

“What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Vaccinations” is one of the books that I have on my list and hope my sister-in-law is able to get it!

Cute shoes. Maybe you can just make a rule of only making shoes for your own children. :-)

I hope that you’ll blog about the vaccinations more as you actually go through them. I wasn’t vaccinated as a child & my parents tried to make sure I knew all the anti-vac information. I *think* that I will have any children vaccinated, but almost certainly on a delayed schedule and maybe selectively. I love learning from your experiences.

We delay Mason’s vaccinations using a modified version of the Dr. Sears schedule. The reason it is modified is because he had one hepatitis vaccine when he was born and the schedule calls for measles, mumps and rubella as separate shots. They are currently not available separately (only as the MMR vaccine) so we just have not given it to him yet. I have decided to wait until he goes to preschool if they don’t come separately or until they are available as three shots. It has worked well for us but it is a personal and family decision.

  7. Melissa Says:

Jackie: I have heard from others that Merck is going to start up the three seperate vaccinations starting in 2011. I am not 100% positive of this, but if so, it is good news. My older son does not have his MMR yet. He is in preschool and all I had to do is sign a waiver. It was easy and nobody had any issues with it. Since he will start kndg this July I have decided to go ahead and vaccinate him with the one MMR shot as “parental choice” is not an option in k-12 schools in MO at the time. He is supposed to have had two MMR’s by kndg so my ped is going to administer his shot in March and will test his titer level at a later date to determine if he is immune. If he has the immunity she will sign off that he doesn’t need two doses of MMR. When he goes to kndg he will have a medical exemption b/c he is in the process of getting the vaccination. Good luck with your decisions!

We’re delaying Bea’s vaccinations. We planned on using the Dr. Sears method, but have kind of winged it as we go along. You can’t stick to his list completely because sometimes there are shortages, etc. I delay the ones that she has a small chance of getting (Polio, MMR, etc.), and may leave some off alltogether (chicken pox). Remember to keep in mind after delivery too that if you don’t want the hep c to let the hospital know that (I think it’s kind of crazy to get a baby hep c unless the mom has it too - at least until later in life). I had a hard time wrapping my mind around giving my newborn, one-day-old baby a vaccination.

Remember too to check with your pediatrician. I found that a lot won’t work with you at all on this issue.
