Happy NFP Awareness Week!

I never really thought about being a mother growing up.  I dated a guy for 1.5 years and another guy for three years before Frank and never once did I think about being a mother, or a wife, when I was with them.  But the moment I met Frank, I knew he was The One.  And with that came my desire to be a mother.  I guess you can say that is what separates him from my past relationships-he was the full package and put all the desires in my heart that the Lord entailed for me.  A pure and true sign that he was my soul mate.

When we started to get serious in our relationship and the topic of marriage and family came up, I would tell Frank that I wanted five children.  Like I said, the Lord put the desire in my heart to be a mother.  Frank was the polar opposite of me and was thinking one or two.  But I had dreams of a big family with lots of little ones running around.  I don’t know why I wanted a big family but it was something I dreamed about as our relationship progressed.

While engaged we took the Natural Family Planning (NFP) classes and talked about waiting a little bit to start a family but never really put a timeline on it.  The night before our wedding, I had fertility signs.  By this time, I had been tracking my fertility signs for four months and I knew the approximate number of fertility days I had until I would ovulate.  I timed it out in my head and we would be on our honeymoon.  I remember talking to Frank on the phone and telling him I was fertile.  With NFP if you don’t want to achieve pregnancy you avoid intercourse during your fertile days.  Well, that was not an option because we were looking forward to our wedding night for quite some time now and we weren’t about to wait any longer.  So we decided to use the fertile days and see what God had in store for us.

We didn’t get pregnant so we took that as a sign that God was not ready for us to be parents.  After talking to my nurse I realized that the allergy and motion sickness medicines I was taking during the trip could have ‘dried’ me out enough to not allow a pregnancy.  After hearing that, I never took those allergy pills again.  The thought of becoming pregnant but being too dry to hold a pregnancy just made me sick.

So for the next year, we diligently followed my fertility signs, avoided when we thought necessary and ’practicing’ when we wanted.  And to do that, it takes a lot of strength and will power.  All the stars can be in perfect alignment and the desire can be so great in your heart, but it is something you just know you can’t do.  NFP really brings you closer to your spouse because you have really raw and open conversations about your sexuality.  Sex isn’t just sex anymore but it becomes about life.  New life that is.  You know that the simple act of love can create life.  Sure you know that with using contraceptives as well, but when you practice NFP and know you are fertile, you really know that that very one action of love can result in a child nine months later.  It is why we call it making love and not sex.

When Frank quit his job, one month before our one year anniversary, we knew we had to wait a little longer to start a family.  But the desire to become a mother was growing so much stronger in my heart everyday.  I easily could have lied to Frank and charted wrong and used a fertile day and “oops” get pregnant.  But my desire was never strong enough to lie to my husband.

Five and a half months later he found a job and that night, I told him it was time to change the way we looked at my chart.  I remember watching that chart for the next two weeks and anticipating my fertile days.  And when they arrived, the week of Frank’s birthday, we had a fun week planned.  I always tease Frank about how he stretches his birthday out for days by planning day after day of activities.  Well that year, he had a good weeks worth of activities.  I think he can thank my fertility for that.

And so, Mary Rene was conceived.  And our love grew deeper and stronger for each other, and for her, each passing day.

With breastfeeding, I didn’t have to worry about charting anymore.  Sure some women get their fertility back quicker when they nurse but I happen to be an exception to the rule.  I was only working twice a week so my lack of pumping encouraged more milk production.  I didn’t start Mary Rene on solids until she was seven months and even then she barely ate what I offered.  By her first birthday, 75% of her intake was still milk.  She dabbled with food here and there but she was a milk girl.  And I was completely fine with that.

But after spending a weekend pumping on my sister’s bachelorette party and the following week going on a business trip, my supply started to change.  And so did Mary Rene’s eating habits.  Within a few weeks I started to get hints that I would be starting my cycle again.  It wasn’t until the week of my sister’s wedding in October that I had a very unusual and light period.  I still thought it was a fluke because it was so abnormal, short and just not what I expected.  Frank knew but we really didn’t discuss charting.

Then November came around and after the five days with my friend ‘Flow,’ I thought there was a chance it was back for good.  We should have started charting right then and there but we didn’t.  And two weeks later, Sweet Pea was conceived.

I guess God knew we shouldn’t be charting.  He had bigger plans for us and we are so thankful for the stars all being in perfect alignment.  He set the stage for us and we accepted our roles and welcome the standing ovation-a baby nine months later.  I’ve thought about this all so many times and what wouldn’t have been if we would have charted.  And I’m thankful for “not being responsible.”  So I have my diligence with NFP to thank for Mary Rene and I have my lack of diligence with NFP to thank for Sweet Pea.  NFP-I owe you for giving me the two sweetest gifts in the world.

Is there a sweeter, more precious word in the world than, mommy?  I doubt so.  Not ma ma, mama or mom, but the perfect, mommy?  Is it not every mom’s dream to hear her child utter the perfect, “mommy?”  Although ‘I love you’ is  a close second.  Mary Rene has perfected the perfect mommy and it is music to my ears.  I could hear her say mommy all day long and it doesn’t get old.  So what if it takes an hour to put her to bed.  Hearing her say “mommy” first thing in the morning, priceless.  And her ‘I love you’ is so cute as well.  At first it was ‘I’ but now it is “I you’ with such love.

Mary Rene has become quite the vocabulary copy cat and is saying everything we say.  Which is very adorable as she is our little parrot repeating our every word to the best of her ability.  I love this stage.

I also love dress up and Mary Rene’s favorite accessory are her purple sunglasses (glasses.)

picture-980

She wants to wear them everywhere, mostly indoors though.  Nine out of 10 times she puts them on upside down though, which is actually much cutier then right side up.

This past week has been all about Piedmont.  Frank, Mary Rene, Sophie B. and I headed down Friday morning to meet my parents who were already there.  This would be our first adventure in the new minivan and with Mary Rene sitting forward.  She was having fun playing peek-a-boo with me through the headrest.

picture-975

Speaking of peek-a-boo

Love her little contagious laugh at the end of the video.

The one downside to sitting forward is her chair doesn’t recline anymore.  Which means naps in the car, don’t seem to be as comfortable.  But she still made it work.

picture-1001

picture-977

I could take pictures of her sleeping everyday.  So precious.

Saturday morning we got ready for Clearwater Lake, THE BEACH, and apparently Mary Rene was in more of a hurry then we were.

picture-981

If we set her clothes out, and she can reach them, she will try her best to get herself dress.  Sometimes she gets it on right but swimsuits…not so much.  So mommy dressed her and she looked fabulous.

picture-983

picture-984

We gladly played the part of Beach Bums and soaked in the sun for a good three hours.

picture-990

picture-985

And water bums too.

picture-993

picture-996

I asked Frank to get a picture of Mary Rene giving me a kiss but she decided to wipe her sandy hands on my face instead.

picture-992

Sunday morning, Frank and my dad rented a john boat and did some serious drinking fishing.  Us girls, we hung out on the beach again.

picture-1008

picture-1007

Sunday happened to be my 31st birthday (happy to be celebrating with the two people who gave me life-my mom and dad, and the two people who make my life-Frank and Mary Rene.)  Since Frank left me in the morning to go fishing, I was a good wife and gave him a nice going away gift.

picture-1011

Besides the obvious fact that I didn’t finish painting his toenails, he is a man with pink toe polish.  And well, when you are renting a boat, you usually don’t wear socks.  So yes, someone pointed out Frank’s “cute” toes.  Love you honey!

That night, Frank surprised me with a birthday cake and we indulged.

picture-1013

What a great birthday weekend, spent with the people I love.

Mary’s World

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Wednesday morning, Mary Rene, my mom and I left for Piedmont, Missouri for a few, much needed days of relaxing.  And much needed it was!  Five days with minimal internet access meant I was only able to do work emails for one hour a day.  Being unglued from my laptop was heaven in a bottle.  I wish I could capture it more often.

I relaxed by spending every evening, after Mary Rene went to bed, crocheting with my mom.  Mary Rene has a lovie that is entirely too big and too white (when you have a black dog) and she carries it everywhere she goes.

picture-863

Case in point, she carried it in the bathroom with her this morning while I was in the shower.

So I made her a new lovie, much smaller and her favorite color.

picture-864

Unfortunately I made it too small and she can’t drag it and won’t welcome it as her new lovie yet.  I’m guessing I’ll have to make her another lovie, a bit longer though.

Mary Rene spent her time in Piedmont relaxing by…

picture-822

playing Chinese checkers

picture-824

chillin’ on the couch looking at old photos of herself and

picture-806

picture-813

picture-815

picture-803

going to Clearwater Lake.  For the most part, we had the beach to ourselves.  Mary Rene really liked having all the room she needed to play and splash.

It was a hot day but you couldn’t tell while wading in the water.  I could have spent the entire day at the beach!  I’m so glad Mary Rene is a water beach bum like me!

picture-811

Oh how she makes my heart flutter too.

picture-817

picture-809

But being at the beach all day can wear a girl out.

picture-818

Everyday while Mary Rene napped, I headed into town to use the free WiFi at McDonald’s so I could get some work email done.  Well, I guess the WiFi isn’t free when you buy a ice cream treat each time!

My dad came down to Piedmont on Friday to spend the rest of the weekend with us.  He decided to make homemade ice cream for us all, yummy.

Unfortunately the process of making ice cream was much more difficult then we imagined.

picture-831

Since we didn’t have crushed ice, my dad had to crush it by hand.  Mary Rene grabbed the broom and cleaned up the mess for him.

And then the ice cream making began.

picture-833

picture-834

Mary Rene was ready for her sample of the ice cream once papa put the bowl in front of her.

picture-837

picture-839

Like I said, yummy.

Frank’s mom has been successful at getting Mary Rene to drink milk by letting her dunk graham crackers in a bowl of milk.  We gave it a try in Piedmont and Mary Rene was in milk heaven.

picture-843

Love this picture!  Turns out that my dad used to do the same thing when he was a little kid and even still did it when he first got married.  (My mom actually remembers buying graham crackers every week for him!)  He used to do it at his grandma’s house too which makes the story even cuter.

Saturday we decided to try out the river instead of Clearwater Lake.

picture-848

There were fish, tadpoles and craw fish everywhere and papa was able to catch one for Mary Rene.

picture-845

Mary Rene wasn’t impressed with the river so we ended up hitting the beach again.  Fine by me!

It was a fun few days but Mary Rene and I were starting to miss her daddy so Sunday we packed up and headed back home.  For the ride home, we decided to hook up the DVD player so Mary Rene could watch Holy Baby.  She loved it and was completely captivated.

picture-856

But the fun filled weekend caught up with Mary Rene and within an hour or so of being home, she got cranky.  She decided that she didn’t want to eat, even when Frank grilled her a hot dog!  She just wanted to cuddle with mommy so we did.  I noticed she was really warm so I took a fever wipe and wiped down her body.

Mary Rene went to bed with no problem but was awake within two hours, screaming.  She was very, very warm and ended up having a slight fever.  Again it was a teething fever reaction because she was biting like crazy on a teething ring.  We gave her some medicine to ease the pain and Frank and I brought her into our bed and we both rubbed her back, face and hair until she settled down and went back to sleep.  Poor girl.

Monday morning she was still sluggish and her teeth were still bothering her.  So far, she has all her top teeth except the second year molars.  She is still missing three bottom teeth, two of them being the second year molars.  I can’t tell which tooth/teeth are causing her such heartache these last couple weeks but I wish they would just cut through already.  I hate to see my baby in such pain.

Hopefully she is still feeling better tonight so we can make swimming lessons.

Mary’s World

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

We had a swim-tastic of a week!  Last Tuesday, Mary Rene started her second year of swim lessons.  It felt good to get in the water and splash around.

picture-6512

(Check out that baby on the right side of the picture.  That momma has her floating face down!)

picture-6492

Unfortunately we have the same lousy teenage instructor who is just there to make a buck.

The following day it was hot, hot, hot again so I decided to blow up Mary Rene’s kiddy pool that she got as a birthday gift from our friend Laura.

picture-660

picture-661

picture-663

I eventually added water but Mary Rene was having more fun without the water.

Friday was another hot day (do you see a pattern developing here?) so we headed over to my parent’s house for a swim.

picture-667

(Swimsuit  my mom made for Mary Rene last year fits pretty good now!)

Mary Rene first wanted to get the floats in the po0l and she knew exactly where they were and wanted to carry them herself.

picture-671

But the floats ended up in her kiddie pool.

picture-691

picture-682

What a little ham.

After her dip in the pool, papa took her for a wagon ride to dry.  Every time he stopped she begged, “more more more.”

picture-693

The weekend ended with another day of swimming at my parent’s house. (Hence, why I am so tan already.)

  picture-744

Mary Rene likes the big pool but would rather be in her personal pool.

picture-739

She wanted the “four” of us ladies in the kiddie pool with her so we could all splash our feet.

What’s the slide doing in the pool, you might ask?  Remember months ago when my dad spotted the Little Tikes playground in his neighbor’s trash?  He got another Little Tikes freebie.

picture-734

picture-736

Seriously, what luck?  This time it was sitting in some one’s yard with a sign on it “Free to Good Boy or Girl.”  And papa knew she was a good girl so got it for her.  In perfect condition and ready to be played on all summer long.

Mary Rene wasn’t a big fan of the slide ending in the pool though.  I think it kind of shocked her because she wasn’t expecting to get wet at the end.  She only went down once and went back to playing with the swing strap.

Wednesday: We had a play date with some friends and went to Edmundson Park by my parent’s house.  Last time we were there they only had a “kid” playground and well those are hard for toddler moms.  But this time they had a second playground just for toddlers and I must say…

picture-589

mommy heaven.  I was able to sit back and relax because the playground was TODDLER SAFE!  All plastic, small steps, small slides and no where to fall off a ledge.  Love it.

Thursday: We took a trip to the library for the second week in a row.  Mary Rene loves the library and really enjoys picking out her own books off the shelf.  She will grab two or three books and then take them over to the table and start “reading” them.

0_0

They also have a colorful rug with plush animals for her to lay on but she likes to sit up straight in the chairs.  So cute.  I let her pick out three books, then I get a book and then we check out.  As soon as we get in the car she says “please” for her book and will read until we reach our next destination.

Friday: At 10 a.m. my parents came over and the four of us left for my parent’s property in Piedmont, Missouri.  They have a car seat in their Jeep so we got to ride with them.  I was really worried about how Mary Rene would do during the long car ride, 2.5 hours, because the last few times we went to Piedmont she had a fit.  But she was a perfect angel the whole way (Nicole C. you would have been  so impressed!)  She slept for an hour but the remaining drive she was really good and that made me feel good too.  My parent’s car seat is forward facing so that might have helped the situation!

When we got into town we headed to the grocery store and right away Mary Rene noticed the pony and had to go for a ride.

picture-607

This is small town Missouri and that horse has easily been there for 20 years.

Inside the store, she saw the car attached to the grocery cart and had to ride that as well.

picture-609

She was having fun steering the wheel while she drove.  Every time I stopped the cart she would start yelling “more more” so I would start ‘driving’ again.  Too terribly cute.

When we got to the cabin she was in heaven.  So many new things to play with and explore.  I know that next time we don’t have to bring toys because she entertained herself very well the whole weekend with all her new stuff.  One thing that really interested her was the traveling booster high chair.  It easily occupied her for 30 minutes each day while she practiced snapping and unsnapping the buckles.

picture-606

Check out that determined face.

Saturday:  Frank and Sophie B. arrived in the morning to join us for the rest of the weekend!  And I must say, Sophie B had a relaxing weekend as well!

picture-624

Once Frank was unpacked we all headed down to Black River for a little relief from the heat.  Although Sophie B was the smart one and stayed in the shade for the most part.  And we…

picture-614  picture-613

picture-620  picture-621

picture-611  picture-622

took a dip in the water.  Mary Rene is absolutely head over heels in love with her water shoes and wanted to wear them the whole weekend.  She loved it when she saw me put my shoes on too.

The water felt incredible and gave us a nice taste of summer.  Oh how I love summer and the water.  And from the looks of it, so will Mary Rene.

Sunday:  A new day means a new watering hole so we decided to head to the breath taking Clearwater Lake.

picture-632  picture-634

picture-644  picture-647

picture-656  picture-653

Like I said, breath taking.  And I’m not just talking about the beach!  That girl is breath taking, wouldn’t you say?  She loved how the waves would splash up against her feet and then run back into the lake.  It made her laugh every time.

(Don’t worry she has a total of five swimsuits!  I just wanted to keep her in the swimsuit with the most skin cover because we would be in direct sunlight.  Even with SPF 60, applying 30 before leaving the house and two hours after applying, she still got a tan.  And yes, I said tan not burn.  She’s got momma’s skin.  Just what we wanted.)

Mary Rene was having fun splashing in the water but when she stuck her face down to “feel” the waves, not so much.  That scared her out of the water for a bit and she only wanted to be held by me.  I slowly got her reacquainted with the water though and she was back to her old water loving self.

picture-657

Some kid had dug a hole and put water in it for a “miniature lake” and Mary Rene was having a good time in her private water hole.

picture-661

She easily could have played in it for a good hour if we wouldn’t have pulled her away.

I tried my darnest to capture a good mommy daugther picture but was not successful.

picture-639  picture-641

But I sure got a good daddy daughter picture.

picture-648

Mary Rene was worn out after being at the beach for two hours and we headed back to the cabin.  She fell asleep within minutes on the car ride home and we were able to transfer her from the car to the bed.  Once she woke up, she was ready to go again.

She heard the train pass by and wanted to sit on the porch to watch it.  We put out a blanket for her and let her look out for her choo-choo train.

picture-662  picture-664

She was being a little ham for the camera and was giving me her best smiles.

Monday:  Memorial Day!  After a nice breakfast and cleaning up, we closed the cabin and headed back to St. Louis.  As soon as we walked in the door she went right to her toys and went to play.  It was as if we were never gone.

Warm Embrace

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

A few weeks ago I met up with my old neighbor, Gina, for a playdate at the park.  She was very gracious to loan me maternity clothes and in return I made her a shopping cart cover for his son who is just turned one.  This was the second time we have met up and before that we haven’t seen each other since she moved.  She left the neighborhood when she was 18 and she is about to turn 30.  Nearly a good 12 years had gone by but really it had been even longer then that because we didn’t have much interaction with each other during the high school years.  So in all honesty a good 15 years had probably gone by.  We are now much older, wiser, mature and mothers.  A good combination of characteristics.

While we were chatting at the park she asked how we came up with the name Gianna Rose for our second daughter.  I started to tell her about St. Gianna and how she is the patron saint for pregnant women and that Rose was my Confirmation name (St. Rose Philippine Duchesne.)  Somehow the subject switched to Mary Rene’s name and Gina asked, “Wasn’t your grandma’s name Mary?”

1

Yes, Pumpkin’s real name was Mary.

I went on to tell her how Pumpkin passed away four years ago.

I told her how Pumpkin wanted another grand baby girl in the family so bad.

I told her how the last girl born in the family was 25 years ago.  And it just so happened that Mary Rene was born on the same day as that girl, Penny, my cousin.

I told her how if we were having a girl I wanted to give her my grandma’s name as a way to honor her…and well, she would finally have her girl.   And we were so blessed to bring Mary Rene into this world.  The first baby girl on my family’s side in 25 years.

I told her that after delivering Mary Rene, I was holding her in my arms and the nurse leaned in and said, “look at your little Pumpkin.”  I looked up at Frank and just started crying, as if I wasn’t already emotional.  Yes she was our little Pumpkin, in more ways than one.

Pumpkin surely was honored.

2

Pumpkin was always around when we were growing up.  She was either at our house hanging out or we were visiting her.  She was around so much that my friends knew her and called her Pumpkin.  And apparently she was around so much that even my neighbors knew her by her nickname and real name.  Her real name, a name we never used.  Pumpkin was that remarkable, that unforgettable.  An unused name, never thought of, never spoken, but can still be linked to her, after so many years.

4

It was so nice to share those memories of Pumpkin with Gina.  I hadn’t talked about Pumpkin in such a long time that the random occurrence was nice.  I haven’t forgotten her but the longer time goes by the less time I take to think of her.  When a random conversation comes up about her it brings me back to being a child when my grandma was alive.  I can close my eyes and see her walking towards me and I can feel her embrace.  She had the tightest hug that was so genuine that you could feel her love with every fiber of her being.  To be honest, I’ve never been hugged like that by another person.

To me, I remember her most by her hugs.  Not that she was a big Cardinals baseball fan.  Not that she was outspoken and always right.  But simply by the way she showed her love.  Through the touch of a warm hug.  I surely do miss her but glad that I still get those random chances to reflect on her everlasting love.

3

Next week happens to be the fifth anniversary of her passing.  It still is shocking that I haven’t seen her or spoken to her in five years.  It still seems like yesterday.  As I had the chance to reflect on her life and once again, be reminded of that warm hug, I am given the opportunity to be a better lover.  To my husband, to my daughter, to anyone I encounter.  If I can greet someone with a warm smile or a loving hug like my grandma, I know I can change someone’s life.  I’m glad to have the reminder that actions speak louder than words and honestly, all you need is love.

Cinco de Mayo

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Tuesday:
Sure Cinco de Mayo is Wednesday but we started our celebration a day early with Mexican Lasagna for dinner.

 picture-457

Yum.  If anyone wants the recipe, leave me a comment and I’ll post the recipe in the comment section.

Frank didn’t like it the first time I made it.  I don’t think he liked it the third time either.  But last night, it was a winner.  And Mary Rene, she demolished her plate, and even had some for lunch on Wednesday.

Wednesday:

On a normal Wednesday, we have dinner with our friends Emily, Chris and their beautiful daughters, Ella and Beatrice.  Since the holiday fell on a Wednesday we wanted to stick with our dinner tradition.  But we also decided to invite our friends Nicole C & Jim and my parents.  Everyone offered to bring a dish, which is so helpful since I planned on cooking the main course.  I found a recipe online for crockpot chicken fajitas so around 10 a.m. I got the crockpot started.  About an hour later, we left to go to the store and when we returned…the smell filled the house.  Love it.  I wanted to stay outside all day so I could keep walking in and out to smell the good food.  Can’t wait to try it.

Frank had the brilliant idea to get a pinata to make this a real party.  My mom offered to buy a pinata as her contribution to the party.  So around 11 a.m., she showed up with the larger than life pinata.

picture-459

Not at all what I pictured when she said she got a ‘duck pinata’ but it is freaking awesome.  Mary Rene was fascinated with it at first but quickly got scared.  We tried to get her to hug or kiss it but she refused.  Finally she gave it a far away wave.

picture-464

I grabbed a knife and made a hole in the back of the head to start stuffing it with candy and toys.  Mary Rene became interested again and wanted to help.

picture-467

When I had stuffed all the candy and toys, which probably only filled the foot of this enormous duck, Mary Rene wanted ‘more more more’ things to put in it.  I didn’t have anything else to add and she started to pick up some random toys laying around the house.  I’m not sure if she put anything extra in the pinata or not.  I guess we’ll find out in a few hours.

A few hours passed and the guest started to arrive.  Ella was a sweet little dear and brought Mary Rene her very own bug catching kit!

picture-476

Mary Rene may be a girlie girl through and through but I’m sure she’ll be finding bugs to put in her new bug house.

It happened to be Ella’s sweet momma’s birthday!  Happy 34th Birthday Emily!

picture-478

WOW!  I can’t believe Beatrice is getting so big and is already six months!  How time has flown by.

Unlike Mary Rene, Ella instantly fell in love with the pinata and was ready to give it a big hug!

picture-481

What a little cutie!

After our nice Mexican meal of chicken fajitas, tacos, beans, rice and layered taco dip, it was time to crack away at the monsterly huge pinata.

Ella’s daddy, Chris, showed her how to swing the bat just right.

picture-485

It only took her one practice swing and she was ready to go.

picture-488

It was so cute to see the girls hitting the pinata because it would barely move but you could tell they were swinging their best.

Next, Frank showed Mary Rene how to hit the pinata.

picture-489

And just like Ella, she quickly learned and gave the pinata some good love taps.

picture-496

I don’t think the girls would ever have been able to open that monster so the boys took some hilarious swings at it.  Eventually, Frank and Nicole C ended up tipping the pinata over so the prizes would spill out.

picture-504

Ella had fun with her new toys and Mary Rene was enjoying collecting the candy.  She didn’t try to eat any of it but instead, she was helping me clean up.  Smart little girl.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Mary’s World

picture-451

Mary Rene has been “sick-free” for well over a week and we finally fell back into place.  She was her normal self and at her old game.  I still didn’t want to do play dates just in case there was something lingering so we had a solo week again.

Wednesday morning my mom planned on coming over to help me pull weeds in my garden.  Before she came over, Mary Rene and I decided to start some more sunflower seeds in the house.  She was having fun helping and doing a job of counting out three seeds for each pot.  Until I turned my back…

picture-440

picture-441

Well, I guess she knows momma can’t grow plants indoors so she was giving me an extra boast!

It turned out that there weren’t any weeds to pull so my mom decided to plant some marigolds and sunflowers for me.  Thanks mom!  Mary Rene didn’t mind being outside while my mom planted.  She had fun going back and forth between my mom and me with her garden tools.  She has been enjoying watering the plants with me every night with her little water bucket.  Unfortunately, she just dumps the bucket upside down on the concrete.  Good thing I don’t let her wear shoes when we water plants!

Mary Rene broke her sunglasses a few weeks ago so on Friday we got her a new pair.

She looks like a little diva and wants to wear them all the time.  So cute.  After our Target run, we went to the park to play for a bit.  I decided to go to a different playground but the same park, St. Ferdinand.  On the other playground she could go down the tunnel slide by herself.  This playground, had an open top double slide so we would both slide down together, side by side, and hold hands.  She laughed the whole way down and when we got to the bottom she would start running for the steps and kept saying, ‘more more more.’  It was so cute because while we were going down the slide, she would just look over at me and laugh. It was so much fun.

But for some reason, she was very attracted to the nearby pavilion.  She ran over to the pavilion and there were about 20 blue tables.  She wanted to climb on top of each table and dance.

As you can see, there is a pretty nice playground in the background…but the tables, way cooler.

Saturday morning, since daddy was home, I decided to touch up my toe nails with a new red coat. Mary Rene was instantly intrigued and put her foot out.  So I painted her big toe hoping that would make her happy enough.  But she wanted ‘more more more’ red toe nails.

So…

picture-444

I painted all 10 toes and she patiently sat and watched.  And then I taught her how to blow on your toes to help them dry.

picture-445

We have a girlie girl, for sure.  She was so excited about her red toes that she had to show Sophie and then her daddy.

picture-447

For the rest of the weekend, she wanted to show everyone her toes.  She was so proud.

Mary Rene’s first pedicure!

Mary Rene can spell.  Or at least she had some good luck.  She has a set of trains that spell out her name and the other day they were scattered on the floor.  I went in the kitchen to start breakfast and when I returned she had spelled out her name.

picture-438

The “M” train is missing so it wasn’t a perfect ‘Mary’ but it was pretty darn close.

picture-439

I decided to drop Mary Rene’s morning nursing session last week.  I was, and still am, having a hard time getting her to nap and I was finding myself nursing her at least twice in the afternoon.  It was starting to get uncomfortable so I thought that if I dropped the morning session then doing two in the afternoon wouldn’t be so bad.  With the extra time in the morning, I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to take a four month break from getting Mary Rene ready the mornings I go to work.  Would you believe that this whole time I’ve been back to work, 16 months, I have been getting her ready for her day at grandma’s house.  I would get up an extra 25 minutes early to get myself ready so I would have time to get her ready too.  But the more I thought about it, I needed a break.  Especially since when Sweet Pea gets here soon, I’ll be doing it all over again.  So Frank started taking over getting Mary Rene ready the mornings I work.  It was very nice to sleep in an extra 20 minutes the last two days!  Love you honey!

After Mass on Sunday, Mary Rene spent the afternoon at my parent’s house so Frank and I could attend the Cardinals game.  What a change of pace for us!  We were kid free for a good four or five hours during the day, it was….odd yet nice to be alone.  Thanks mom and dad for watching Mary Rene!  She sure has a good time over there.  She thinks she owns that place.

Mary Rene’s Birth Story

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

As I start to prepare for Sweet Pea’s birth, I have been walking down memory lane with Mary Rene’s birth.  I looked back in my blog and realized that I never wrote down her birth story.  My good friend Jenny K wrote down some brief details the day she was born, but I barely finished the story (this is the best I did.)  If I would have written the story shortly after her birth, the story would sound much different.  But now, after knowing what I know and allowing myself to come to terms with everything, I’m sure the story sounds different.  So here is how I see the birth story now.

Monday, Sept. 15, 2008:

I woke up around 5 a.m. with light cramps.  They reminded me of my bad period days, years and years and years ago when I was in high school.  I kept thinking about Midol, my miracle cramp drug, and how badly I wanted a piece, or two.  But I knew that wasn’t an option because…this was the first stages of labor.  I just knew it.  I had my 10th doctor’s appointment at 10 a.m. so I just had to sleep off the cramps for a few more hours.

I remember going back to sleep for a couple more hours and eventually getting up to soak in the bathtub.  The cramps were very light and were approximately 20-25 minutes apart.  They were very manageable but it was obvious that something was going on with my body.  Frank decided to call into work so he could attend my doctor’s appointment just in case we were going to have the baby soon.

We went to my appointment and Dr.  Gosser confirms that I was having contractions.  I actually had one while he was checking my cervix.  But the contractions were so far apart and so light that he said this could easily go on for a couple more days…or he could see me later that night.  So we went home and Frank decided to go to work.  I had started my maternity leave on Friday so it was my first day off work.  I decided to just take it easy, lounge around the house and take another bubble bath.  The bubble baths were nice and really relaxed me (did I even add bubbles or is it just nicer to say bath with the word bubble in front?) I could easily have stayed in the tub all afternoon but I was getting antsy and decided to clean up a bit.   (Future water birth in store?)

3 p.m.

The contractions started to pick up, about 15 minutes apart (I’m guessing) and they were getting to the point that I had to do something.  I got on my exercise/yoga/birthing ball and watched a little tv while I did some breathing exercises.  This lasted for a good 45 minutes until I got distracted and couldn’t focus on my own.  My dad had already left for work and my mom was resting before she went into work that evening.  I didn’t want to wake her so I called my mother-in-law, Joanne, and asked if she would come over.

4:30 p.m.

Joanne arrives and she finds me pacing in the backyard.  I told her that the pacing was helping so she asked if I wanted to go for a walk.  I’m very fortunate that Joanne walks approximately 60 minutes every day (to help manage her diabetes) so she didn’t tire during our little adventure.  So walk we did.  We went down the street, turned right, make another right, turned left and found ourselves in front of Uncle Frank and Aunt Rosemary’s house (Aunt Rosemary is Joanne’s mom’s sister.)  Uncle Frank was standing outside so we popped in to say hi.  Aunt Rosemary happened to be on the phone with her daughter Laurie and the whole family got to learn that I was in labor.  We chatted for about 15 minutes but standing still made the contractions worse so we continued on our walk.  We finished the street and turned left back towards my block.  I think we walked around the block a few more times, ran into one of my neighbors and Joanne told them I was in labor.  At this point I wasn’t up for small talk so luckily Joanne was doing it for me.  We timed out our walk perfectly and got back to my house a little bit before Frank got home from work.

5:30 p.m.

The contractions were easy to manage while I was walking but now that I was back home I felt a little out of control.  I sat on my birthing ball and Frank got out his piece of paper and started to time my contractions.  He timed my contractions for about 30 minutes and said they were coming five minutes apart.  In our birthing classes they said not to come to the hospital until the contractions had been five minutes apart for one hour.  But since we weren’t timing them before we were afraid they were already five minutes apart for an hour and we decided we should leave for the hospital.

(This is where the story changes for me.)

6:15 p.m.

We pack up the Jeep and leave for the hospital.  Luckily I was thinking ahead and asked Frank to bring an empty bucket.  Between calling family and friends, I vomited the entire way to the hospital.  The 30 minute car ride was unbearable.  Note to self: do not talk on my phone on the way to the hospital with Sweet Pea.  Do not let Frank talk on the phone either.  Do your breathing exercises.  Focus, focus, focus.

 7 p.m.

We sign in and are escorted to a laboring room while the nurses get my paperwork in order.  They tell me to take off my clothes and get into a gown.  I change clothes and Frank and I patiently wait in the room for further instructions.  The contractions keep coming and I do some breathing exercises but all I can think about it Frank and me being alone in the room.  I’m not really sure what we are supposed to do and I want someone to come in and give us instructions.

7:30 p.m.

A nurse finally comes in the room and has some more paperwork for me to sign.  We sign the paperwork, whatever it was and are ready for further instructions.  She has me get into the bed so they can hook me up to the fetal monitor so they can check on the baby.  The fetal monitor is hooked up and the machine starts beeping and the chart starts moving showing the baby’s heart rate.  They add the cuff to my arm so they can monitor my blood pressure.  Every few minutes, the cuff gets tight as it takes a reading.  This started to get really annoying because it was taking readings nearly every 20 minutes, so it seemed.  They add something to my finger, I can’t remember what, but it was monitoring my heart rate.  Either the cuff on my arm or the thing on my finger was constantly beeping for a good hour or so and the nurses couldn’t make it stop.  They said I was doing fine but the machine was acting up and well, I had to deal with the noise.

8 p.m.

The anaesthesiologist arrives to talk to me about the epidural.  I tell him nicely that I don’t want the epidural and would prefer Stadol.  He tells the nurse to get me started on an IV so they can get the Stadol going.  Even though I don’t want the epidural he has to go over the procedure with me just in case I decide to get it later.  He discusses the epidural, pros and cons, and then ask me to sign a waiver.  I sign it.

8:15 p.m.

The nurse attempt to get an IV started.  It takes four painful tries and they are finally successful.  They start to pump me with Stadol.

9 p.m.

The anaesthesiologist  comes back in and ask if I want an epidural.  I say no.  Frank heads down the hallway to greet our family that has arrived.

9:05 p.m.

The house doctor comes in, along with a nurse with a long pointy instrument.  He instructs me that he needs to break my water to speed up labor.  I’m told to spread my legs and he inserts the long pointy instrument and…pop, my water breaks.  Water gushes everywhere, I mean everywhere.  The nurse quickly has to change the bed pad and comments that she hasn’t seen that much water come out of a woman before.  Lovely.  I am soon nicknamed, Puddles.

9:15 p.m.

Frank comes back in the room and I tell him that they broke my water.  Soon my brother and sister walk in the room.  This part is a complete daze to me.  I remember trying to do small talk with them but the contractions are starting to get really strong.  It never crosses my mind to get out of the bed and walk around.  By this point, I have been in the bed for nearly two hours.

100_0186

I lay there and fight through the pain.  I don’t do any breathing exercises because I just can’t even think.

9:45 p.m.

The anaesthesiologist happily walks in the room, with his magic cart wrapped in a red ribbon (joking.)  He ask if I am ready for that epidural now.  I quickly say yes and he turns and gets his cart.  He responds, “I knew you would want it once they broke your water.”

My sister and brother leave the room and the nurse ask me to lean to the side of the bed.  Frank stands next to me and just as I move to the edge of the bed, a huge gush of water drops on his feet.  I hear the nurse calling me Puddles again, blah blah, whatever.  Just do it already.

10 p.m.ish

The epidural has been administered and the nurse has me roll to both sides.  The anaesthesiologist walks back in the room and ask if I can feel the contractions.  I can still feel them on the left but not on the right.  He realizes that the medication only went to part of my body so he needs to do it again.  This time the nurse moves me to the left first so the drug will take effect on that side.

10:20 p.m.ish

The anaesthesiologist comes back in and ask if I can feel the contractions.  My answer is no, I can’t feel a darn thing.

A catheter is inserted since I will no longer be able to get up and use the restroom.  As I write this, I am just now realizing that I must have gotten out of the bed sometime between my arrival and now to use the bathroom.  I mean, really, I must have used the bathroom.

I am told that I will get fluids through the IV and can munch on ice chips but nothing else.

10:30 p.m.-11:59 p.m.

I don’t feel one single contractions.  Not an ounce of pain.  I spend this time resting, taking short naps here and there.  My family no longer comes in the room but Frank occasionally goes down the hall to give them updates while I nap.  The cuff on my arm keeps tightening around my arm every 20 minutes or so, which is very annoying.  (I realize now that there is no need for that!)

During this time Dr. Gosser visits to see how I’m progressing.  He does a vaginal exam and I’m getting close.  He just got done delivering another baby and is going to rest until I get close to delivery.

Tuesday, September 16th (12 a.m. to 2:20 a.m.)

The nurse, whom has been with me this entire time, pretty much runs the show.  She is awesome and I am so thankful for her.  She is calm, sweet and the most perfect nurse I’ve ever met.  I wish I could remember her name but I do have a picture of her coo-ing over Mary Rene.  I decided not to upload the picture though because Mary Rene’s head is all distorted.

My parents, sister, brother, Frank’s parents and sister are all in the waiting room down the hall.  Frank continues to give them updates while I nap.  I don’t find out until much later but they found a window in the hallway and were able to look out the window into my room!  They can’t see me, thankfully, but they are able to see the rear entrance of the room and can tell when people come in and out.

The  nurse does vaginal exams periodically and finally announces that I am at 10 centimeters.

2:20 a.m.

I am at 10 centimeters and the nurse tells me I can start pushing if I want.  She ask if I feel the urge to push and I honestly can’t feel a darn thing.  She says we’ll start in five minutes and she starts prepping the room.

2:25 a.m.

The stir-ups are pulled up so I can put my legs in them.  My legs are like logs and Frank and the nurse have to lift them into the stir-ups.  My right leg is completely numb since it got a double shot of the epidural.  I really thought the drug would have worn off a little by now but it hasn’t.  Since I can’t feel the contractions, the nurse relies on the fetal monitor and each time I have a contractions she tells me to push.

I push as she counts to 10 and then I am told to stop, breath, relax.  Approximately two minutes later, I am told to push again.  She counts to 10 and then I am told to stop, breath, relax.  Two minutes go by and I am ready to push again.  After the third push, she tells me that I am not pushing correctly and gives me a good tip to help the pushing go faster.  Frank reminds me that it is the same tip his cousin Laurie told me, and that I reminded him to remind me about it.  Well, I am not of sound mind at this time so everything presented before this point has gone out the door.  So for the fourth push, I push the way I was told, like I am having a bowel movement.  She counts to 10 and then I am told to stop, breath, relax.

She is very happy with the way I pushed and said that I made some significant improvements.  She can see the baby’s head and sees some hair.  Frank takes a look and says it looks like blonde hair.  I don’t believe him but when they ask if I want a mirror I say no.

The nurse continues to tell me when each contraction starts so I know when to push.  While I’m pushing, she massages me below to help expand the skin.  Talk about leaving your modesty at the door!

3:30 a.m. ish

I am really close to delivering so the nurse gives Dr. Gosser a call and he says he is on his way.

My sister and dad, who are at the secret window, see the nurse wheel in a bio-hazard cart and see Dr. Gosser walk in.

I continue pushing every two minutes for 10 seconds.  I am getting really tired and some of these pushes only last six seconds.  Frank is my little cheerleader and is counting with the nurse and after every push he tells me how great I am doing.  He can tell I am getting tired and he gives me words of encouragement before each push.

3:41 a.m.

Dr. Gosser tells me, “one more push and we’ll find out if we have a little Mary Rene or a Luke Francis.”

3:42 a.m.

With one push, out comes the baby’s head and with another push out comes the shoulders and the rest of the body.  The room is filled with a loud cry and Dr. Gosser notes that the baby has a good set of lungs.

An eternity later

Dr. Gosser is finally able to spread our modest baby’s legs and we find out, she’s a girl.  A sweet, precious, perfect, little baby girl.  The nurse wraps her in a blanket and immediately hands her to me.  While she is on my chest, the nurse cleans her off and I am in complete awe.

100_0202

Blonde hair, blue eyed sweet baby girl.  Not at all what I imagined but I am completely captivated by her beauty and innocence.

Frank is standing next to me, crying and I can feel the love spilling out of him onto us.  He gushes over his perfect little angel and repeatedly kisses me on the head.

Dr. Gosser lets me know that I tore a little and he needs to stitch me up.  I don’t even notice what is going on down below, don’t feel a thing, because I am head over heels in love with this angel.

My sister announces to everyone that I had the baby because she sees camera flashes going off in the room.  Frank does a good job of capturing the moment.  Although a few days later when I look at the pictures, I noticed he had a couple shots with my legs still spread and Dr. Gosser finishing up the dirty work.  I deleted the pictures instantly.

Frank holds his precious angel for the first time.

100_0194

He had a slight cough that morning and he was afraid to get our angel sick.  The nurse gave him a face mask and he wore it on and off for the first couple days of her life.

100_0195

Frank later mentions that he watched me delivery the placenta, something I didn’t even feel or notice.  I didn’t even see it.

4 a.m.ish

The nurse interrupts our lovefest and ask me if I want to try and nurse.  Yes, yes I want to try and nurse.  My mind goes completely blank and I can’t even think about what to do.  The sweet nurse helps me get Mary Rene positioned correctly and I try to get her to latch on.  After a few attempts, she finally gets her mouth around me and barely sucks.  The nurse mentions that Mary Rene has been through a lot and we should try again later.  I agree.

4:30 a.m.ish

Somehow the room is back in complete order and I am cleaned up to the point that I can have visitors.  Frank gets my parents, sister, his parents and his sister.  They all come in and fall in love with the baby in my arms.

100_0218

I hold her in my arms this whole time, not once giving her up.  I have eternity to share her with the world but for now she is mine.

The nurse says it is time for everyone to leave so they can give Mary Rene her first bath.  Everyone decides to go down the hall to watch.  Frank is a dear and he videotapes this for me.

Now that I am alone with the nurse she tells me that I need to try and get up and use the restroom.  I lean over the edge of the bed and as soon as I try to stand I get really light-headed and feel like I am going to faint.  The nurse quickly catches me and helps me get into a wheelchair.  She reminds me that I lost a lot of blood and the drug is starting to wear off and I am really weak.  That makes me feel some what better but I am close to crying.

She says she will wheel me to the bathroom.  She gets me to the bathroom, helps lift me on the toilet so I can try and go.  I don’t remember if I went or not but eventually she helps me off the toilet and I’m back in the chair.

5:30 a.m. ish

Frank is back and a nurse brings in Mary Rene.  I hold her in my arms and we are escorted down the halls, proud parents, to our new room for the next two days.

And our new lives begin.

#65: In Progress

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Growing up, my dad would plant a garden off and on and I always thought it was neat to see the vegetables grow.  I’ve lived in my house for seven years and this is what my backyard has looked like.

picture-269

Lots of room for a garden, wouldn’t you agree?  (And a second house, and a garage, and a playground, and, and…)

So I added “Plant a Garden” to my list and planned on doing it this year.  It worked out great that the February Enrichment Meeting for my La Leche League group was all about gardening.  WOW!  These gals are so smart, in so many different areas, and gave me more information then I could have imagined.  I quickly felt overwhelmed and intimated by the task at hand.  But the next day when I called my dad, I felt better because I knew he would be able to help me.

The very next day, my dad helped me get my compost bucket ready (in picture above.)  He had me draw dots on the side of the bucket so he could drill holes.  Well, I thought he was going to drill the holes but he made me do it.  Which was actually pretty cool to do and I wanted to make many more holes so I could keep using the drill.  I had just got done eating a banana so my compost started right then and there.

Next step, getting my seeds started.  At the meeting we did a Seed Exchange and I was able to get different vegetables for my garden.  Two months ago, while Mary Rene napped, I got started on my seeds.

picture-268

Well…that didn’t work.  I started off with the seeds under a CFL light bulb but nothing was growing.  I moved them to the windowsill and still no growth.  I ended up throwing all the seeds away and started over.  And…yeah that didn’t work either.  Now I know I don’t have a green-indoor-thumb.  Hopefully I’ll have better luck outside.

Last weekend, Frank borrowed my dad’s tiller and got my garden started.

picture-462

Now I just got to make something, besides grass and weeds, grow in there.  I planted my seeds in half of the garden and left the other half empty.  One of the gals in my LLL group is going to give me some of the plants that she successful grew inside!  What a sweetie!  Once I get those I will plant them into the ground and go to work.

So here is to scratching something off my list.  I planted a garden, yes.  Will it grow, only time will tell.  Hopefully I’ll have some pictures to update here over the next couple months.
